New Years Eve Fishing Trip

Shawn and Krista had us booked today and bought along a few friends. 5 Redskin fans and one Dallas fan so I'm not real sure how they all got along for the day without throwing him over. The weather this morning was beautiful but cold with a slight swell on the ocean. We started out fishing some of our favorite spots with no luck and then slid offshore a bit to some deeper water. The Gannets attacked us and ate almost every bait in the spread but two and a pair of yellow fins ate those. We got lucky and caught them. The Gannets got so bad we had to put out some spreader bars and artificials because we couldn't keep a ballyhoo in the water more than 2 minutes before another Gannet would come and attack it, I've never seen them so hungry. we caught some albacore throughout the day as well as about ten gannets or more so we had plenty of action.

Dec 15th fishing

Looking out to the ocean from the channel

Sunrise

Matt, Stan and Guy with a few black fins from the day
Today we had Matt Miller and and a couple of his friends Guy and Guys father Stan who drove all the way from western Nebraska for this fishing trip. I said man you're in the middle of nowhere aren't you and he said nope but I can stand on my back porch and see it. 1800 miles to catch a fish. I sure am glad we had a nice weather day and caught a few tunas for them. We had great weather for the day and the fishing was OK but not great. We wound up with a catch of black fins and a dolphin. We pulled the hooks on a few more and lost a nice yellow fin right there at the end of the day. Sure wish he would have stayed on. Thanks for the day guys. Matt I'll see you on June 24th. Hope you have a Merry Christmas.

Dec 7th and 8th Fishing

Fish On
Here's Looking at ya
I swear he was this big!
December Mahi
Cruising down the channel on the way home!
This weekend we had Roger and Cheryl Flury, John Mentzer and a couple of their friends along. The targeted species were tunas of any kind. Friday was rather choppy despite the weather forecast for good weather and the fishing was so so. We caught a few nice Black fin tunas that day and got ruined by the big wahoos one time. Fishing fluorocarbon wind on leaders for tuna and having wahoos jump all over you just isn't in your favor. All in all we made it through the day with a few fish.

Saturday morning started out with fog. We made our way down the channel in the fog and made it through the narrow spots ok. We got to the bar and it was breaking all the way across with a hard ebb tide and big swell. I could see the boat ahead of me on the outside of the bar and saw a lull in the sets, went for it and made it across safely. Once I got across I wasn't going back across until I could see better and the tide switched. The two of us stuck together and eased on offshore, it was kind of like an amusement park ride that morning with the swell and fog. About 20 miles out the fog cleared as we entered the hot water and the swell layed out with the current. We started out catching a few black fin and false albacore right off the bat then it slowed right down. During the afternoon the tunas came up top chasing bait and showing very well but no one could get them to bite. It's just that way some times and it's frustrating but there's not a thing you can do about it but watch them. It was a good show for a bit if nothing else. They are here at least. Thanks for the weekend guys and I hope you all have a Merry Christmas with your families. See you in the summer.

We are still here

Hey Folks We are still here and all doing OK. There was no internet or phone service for a couple of days and cell service was spotty at best. We had a lot of tide for a couple of days from the sound as well as ocean overwash up on the northern end. The roads are closed until before Thanksgiving when hopefully they will be cleaned off and the torn up places repaired. I don't believe I have ever seen as much sand on the roads as we got with this storm. The bridges all survived and are safe for travel. The Oregon Inlet bridge is closed due to the road being closed as well as NCDOT using it to get all of the equipment on the island to clear HWY 12. There is a ferry running from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe that you can travel on to get here. You may have to sit and wait for a good while once you get there so if you plan on coming make sure you bring some snacks and drinks as well as a book or something to do. It takes about two hours to cross after boarding.
We are going to be back to fishing here soon and if you are interested just give us a call. remember if you are coming on the island to fish for a day and leave that you will need to plan extra travel time into your schedule to allow for the ferry and the wait that you may have. I will post a schedule below.
The boat came through the storm alright. We have some minor toe rail damage from the boat getting on a piland when the wind shifted but other than that I think we are ok. Nothing some epoxy, awl grip and time won't fix. The cottage is fine if you want to come and plan a stay with us and do some fishing. I hope all of my friends up the coast are fairing well. I know that this was a big blow for you guys and I hope you get cleaned up and put back together quickly. We've been there and done that and there is nothing fun or easy about it at all. If we can help in some way give us a call.

Here is the Ferry Schedule for Stumpy Point to Rodanthe

■Departing Stumpy Point at 6 a.m., 8, 10, noon, 2 p.m., 4 and 10; and
■Departing Rodanthe at 7 a.m., 9, 11, 1 p.m., 3, 5 and 7.

Friday 10-12 Great Fishing

Pretty start to the day
Catlin and the Boys

One of our Yellow FIns

Todays Sail

The Maryland Boys

Man we had a nice day on the water with some good fishing to go along with it. I went down the beach to go look for a wahoo starting out this morning but didn't have much luck. After a few laps around the break I wandered on off towards the 100 and got a couple of tuna bites and caught a yellow fin. We circled around the area, saw a few birds had a couple more bites and caught another tuna. Then the dolphins hit us and we caught a sail all in one circle. We got set back out and had a few more bites and wound up with a few more tunas. Later in the day The black fin tunas hit us a little further up the beach and we caught 6 out of that. Just before coming home we caught a few dolphin and a couple wahoo  around a float. In the midst of it all today we also pulled off another sail and missed another. It's shaping up to be some great fall fishing. Thanks Catlin and crew for a great day. We sure hope to see you all again.

Saturday Oct. 6th

Sunrise
The ride to work this morning

82 year old retired judge John with his Wahoo!

Sail on the wire

Nice Sail Fish!
Today we had a make up charter. The goal was to catch some meat but that didn't work out to well for us. John caught a nice Wahoo first thing this morning. We fished around that spot for a bit with no bites and then we moved on offshore a ways looking for some grass or a float that may hold dolphin. We found some patches of grass and trolled them for 4 miles with only one bite which was a White Marlin that got away. I fished back up the beach and caught a sail fish up the line a few miles. We missed another sail a little while later and missed a Wahoo on the way back inshore. The weather was beautiful but the fishing was over all a little slow. A couple boats got lucky and found a school of dolphin around a float or patch of grass but they were few and far between. Thanks a bunch guys.

Friday Oct. 5th

The Gang!
We had some old customers along with us today. I was hoping to catch them a box full of fish but the fish gods weren't smiling down on us today. We missed a sail fish on the first bite of the day and then had a Wahoo sky on a flat line and cut us off. We trolled on offshore from there and found a little scattered grass and worked around in it. I went by a small patch and got a bite. When I went back there were a few dolphin under it and we caught 7 and were glad to have them. I went by a board a little later and hooked a couple of which we caught one. I pulled back by the board and never saw another dolphin but we had a big bite as we were getting away from it that ended up being a Blue Marlin. He was about a 300 lb. fish and we had him on one of the smallest rods we had out. It took us an hour and 20 minutes to catch him but that's pretty good considering the tackle and the size of the fish. It was alot of chasing him around to catch him but we did it. It was a good day all in all. Thanks guys.

Monday Oct. 1st

David with his Dolphin

David with his Wahoo
Today we had David Austin, his father and a couple of friends aboard. They live out around Charlotte, N.C.. They wanted to catch a marlin today so that's what we set out looking for. We put our lines in and looked around a bit and then went on off to the deep. The conditions were not idea at all for what we wanted to do but we gave it a try for a few hours. We had a SE wind, scattered grass and it was raining cats and dogs. It was almost impossible to stay out of the grass because I just couldn't see it due to the rain. We did catch a dolphin and have a bite out of a sail that we didn't come tight on. I trolled up inshore the last hour looking for a bite and we caught a nice Wahoo. No billfish but at least they got some dinner. Thanks guys and hope to see you all again.
