Friday May 10th

Today we had Andy Penz and some of his buddies along for their first of two days of fishing. It was a beautiful day and the fishing was great. I think I have some good video of some dolphin fishing but my go pro is on the boat. I'll try to add it later. This was the catch from day one of two.

This week we had Bob, Dave, Skip, Tom and Jerry in town for 5 days of fishing. Luckily we were finally able to get three days in after the first three days we got weathered out. This is the 14th or 15th  year this crew has been fishing with me the week before Mothers day and most years we get our days in and occasionally we may only get in one or two. We had some good fishing over the three days catching some nice tunas, dolphins and Skips citation Wahoo. We spent Thursday looking for a Marlin and trying some spots for a grouper bite but were unsuccessful in both. We did catch a few dolphin and a few blackfin tunas that morning though. I'll be looking forward to next year and hopefully being able to take them again. Thanks for the days guys I always look forward to it and your company.

Blue Marlin and dolphins

Butch and the boys with their catch

Jr directing traffic. These guys needed all the directing they could get. Haha
Today we had a good crowd along with us and some pretty weather to go along with it for a change. The last couple of days have been pretty rough. We jigged a limit of Amber Jacks this morning then went back in search of some other fish. I found a log floating and that is where we caught all but a couple of our dolphins at. Lucky find there. We went on and fished up the hundred from there and hooked and caught a 500 pound Blue Marlin this after noon. What a great day. Same crew again in the morning if the weather will let us go.

Yellowfins are showing up

Steve, Terry, Andrew and Brandon with their catch

Steve with his Yellowfin
Brandons Snowy Grouper

The yellowfins have made a showing the last couple of days and they are a nice class of fish. I'd say they are averaging close to 40 lbs a piece. Yesterday we had Andrew and Terry Fink and their friends Steve and Brandon along. We went looking for the tunas first thing in the morning and we caught a nice wahoo while we were setting out. The guys had asked about trying for a grouper so we fished to near a spot and made a drop, luckily we had a bite and caught a 40 lb. Snowy for the guys. We went back to tuna fishing and ended up catching 4 for the day and loosing 4 others, it just goes that way sometimes. It was a pretty day on the water and we were glad to be there.

Pretty March Day

Days catch

We had a great day on the water today with some beautiful March weather. I guess it's the calm before the storm since its supposed to blow 35 to 40 the next three days. We started out our day trolling and looking for a tuna bite. We had a couple of good marks but no bites out of them. After a bit we broke out the jigging rods and went to work. The guys got the hang fairly quick and we caught some black fin tuna, bonita mackerel, greater and lesser Amberjack and some Almaco jacks as well. All great eating fish. Some of the boys ran up above and caught a Blue fin apiece but we opted to do this for the day. Everyone got to catch several fish and had a good time. Thanks Pete, Don and Dan. Hope to see you guys again.

The Blue Fins Are Finally Here!!

Nice Trophy fish

Another nice one

Mr Chris Bellamy with his Blue Fin

Fat one on the leader.
OK Guys the Blue Fin Tunas have finally made their showing here at Hatteras. There were several fish caught on Saturday out of a very small fleet of boats. Nice fat fish too. There are several boats out looking today and I feel sure they will get back on them. Sounds like a big body of fish.  We have plenty of open time and the cottage is wide open if you are interested in coming down and trying for one of these giants. Give me a call at 252-216-5565 and set up a trip.

New Years Eve Fishing Trip

Shawn and Krista had us booked today and bought along a few friends. 5 Redskin fans and one Dallas fan so I'm not real sure how they all got along for the day without throwing him over. The weather this morning was beautiful but cold with a slight swell on the ocean. We started out fishing some of our favorite spots with no luck and then slid offshore a bit to some deeper water. The Gannets attacked us and ate almost every bait in the spread but two and a pair of yellow fins ate those. We got lucky and caught them. The Gannets got so bad we had to put out some spreader bars and artificials because we couldn't keep a ballyhoo in the water more than 2 minutes before another Gannet would come and attack it, I've never seen them so hungry. we caught some albacore throughout the day as well as about ten gannets or more so we had plenty of action.

Dec 15th fishing

Looking out to the ocean from the channel

Sunrise

Matt, Stan and Guy with a few black fins from the day
Today we had Matt Miller and and a couple of his friends Guy and Guys father Stan who drove all the way from western Nebraska for this fishing trip. I said man you're in the middle of nowhere aren't you and he said nope but I can stand on my back porch and see it. 1800 miles to catch a fish. I sure am glad we had a nice weather day and caught a few tunas for them. We had great weather for the day and the fishing was OK but not great. We wound up with a catch of black fins and a dolphin. We pulled the hooks on a few more and lost a nice yellow fin right there at the end of the day. Sure wish he would have stayed on. Thanks for the day guys. Matt I'll see you on June 24th. Hope you have a Merry Christmas.

Dec 7th and 8th Fishing

Fish On
Here's Looking at ya
I swear he was this big!
December Mahi
Cruising down the channel on the way home!
This weekend we had Roger and Cheryl Flury, John Mentzer and a couple of their friends along. The targeted species were tunas of any kind. Friday was rather choppy despite the weather forecast for good weather and the fishing was so so. We caught a few nice Black fin tunas that day and got ruined by the big wahoos one time. Fishing fluorocarbon wind on leaders for tuna and having wahoos jump all over you just isn't in your favor. All in all we made it through the day with a few fish.

Saturday morning started out with fog. We made our way down the channel in the fog and made it through the narrow spots ok. We got to the bar and it was breaking all the way across with a hard ebb tide and big swell. I could see the boat ahead of me on the outside of the bar and saw a lull in the sets, went for it and made it across safely. Once I got across I wasn't going back across until I could see better and the tide switched. The two of us stuck together and eased on offshore, it was kind of like an amusement park ride that morning with the swell and fog. About 20 miles out the fog cleared as we entered the hot water and the swell layed out with the current. We started out catching a few black fin and false albacore right off the bat then it slowed right down. During the afternoon the tunas came up top chasing bait and showing very well but no one could get them to bite. It's just that way some times and it's frustrating but there's not a thing you can do about it but watch them. It was a good show for a bit if nothing else. They are here at least. Thanks for the weekend guys and I hope you all have a Merry Christmas with your families. See you in the summer.
